Gig in Aberdeen for a large oil company

January 28th, 2013

Last night I was gigging in Aberdeen.  It is my second time to perform in Aberdeen and I very much enjoy it there, the people are so friendly, and it is a pleasure to perform there.Anyway, last night I was feeling sparkly and between my first and second sets I added more and more rhinestones to my face, I LOVE the end result and I felt fabulous 🙂

Hair/Headdress, make up and costume are all done by myself.

Knees, and picture’s from today’s training session

January 23rd, 2013

A few weeks ago I took a few weeks off and had keyhole surgery on my knees to clean up the cartilage, and trim away impinged inflamed fat pad.  Anyway, being very strong pre-arthroscopy means my recovery has felt rather speedy, i can not jump or tumble for a few more weeks, but I have my full ROM except very end range flexion back and low impact stuff is fine.

I am now fully back handstanding on canes and contorting 🙂

Pre-Op – Pictures from 2 weeks ago when i was bored waiting to go down to theatre.

2 Weeks Post Op – Feeling fabulous again

I am bionic haha, actually i put my speedy recovery down to three things – firstly I was very strong and flexible pre-op, secondly i made a whole rehab plan and followed it religiously, with one week of a lot of rest and basic exercises and icing, then built it up gradually in the second week, etc, and thirdly my mind set is one where i am very positive, think well be well, think strong be strong, it all starts with how your mind thinks.  Oh, and i also listen to my body, such an important thing.

Nick has made a wonderful picture called ‘Dandelion’.  Each part of the picture is me, doing a bendy handstand.  Isn’t it wonderful!!!dandelion-by-nick-delaney.jpg

An old picture

January 7th, 2013

I have very very few pictures from my sports acro trio days (more from the duo days), but here is one of me and my trio in a display we did in about 2003/4.  This trio unfortunately never got to compete!  I am in the middle.  (yes i need to point my toes more and yes Bethan needs to get her legs higher!).

January 7th, 2013

I have many plans for January and February.Among them is creating.  The beginning few months of the year are for me in general quieter than the other months, this means i can spend some quality time in the rehearsal space training and creating some new material.  I have already started on my new act ‘Hypnotized’, and over the next few months I aim to finish and debut it.  I must admit to being extremely excited because I think it is going to be an awesome act 🙂   I am liking spending time over creating this act as it means i can scrutinise each bit of it to make it smooth and top class.

Another of my plans is to get back into doing more aerial.  I am mainly a handbalancer and contortionist and those always will take first place in my training.  But I aim to also begin to develop a new aerial hoop act, I look nice on the aerial hoop too 🙂   Infact once I had stopped competitive gymnastics then I began my journey into the circus world as an aerialist – static trapeze and then aerial hoop.  Then I specialised in handbalance and contortion.

Did you know that…

January 5th, 2013

Ok one of the most popular questions I get asked is if I have always been able to do bendy things.

The answer is yes and no.

It is a mixture of natural ability, and a lot of hard work and dedication.

As a child I was naturally flexible, I can not remember not being able to do the splits or a bridge. Would this flexibility have lasted had I not been put into gymnastics? I don’t know.  But what gymnastics did do is maintain my flexibility and build on my strength and power.  I say maintain because I did Artistic Gymnastics and they had more focus in making me stronger and more powerful.  It was my own work in increasing my flexibility throughout my teenage years that led me to becoming more flexible, and even more work in my 20s.  It was then experience, training, and rehearsal time that led to me being able to use the technical skills I had and make them interesting and into a performance worthy state.  Technical ability is useless as a performer if your performances are boring and the same old.

But on a technical level then another question people ask me is if I am double jointed? No, i just have one joint like every other human being.  But here is an interesting page I found that talks a bit about bendy bodies 🙂

Did you know that….

I have a degree in Physiotherapy… yes I managed to get a 2.1 BSc (hons) Physiotherapy degree just before I began my performing career.  Immediately after graduating I launched myself into the performing arts and did not attempt to get a job as a physiotherapist.  My heart did not lie in becoming a physiotherapist at that time.

I wanted to go straight into performing but my parents had other ideas and wanted me to do a good academic/career enhancing degree.

Since I was very academic then this was one of the best things they made me do, because not only is it always there to use should i need to use it, then even though it only taught me the basics of the basics and tbh i don’t remember it all.. then it taught me so so much that I do remember that is so relevant to my current occupation in performing and in my teaching work.

For some people higher education is not their best option.  But for me personally, then getting my degree and the skills and knowledge i acquired along the way were definitely a bonus 🙂  Infact without it maybe I wouldn’t be where I am today, life is a journey, and some things just happen for a reason.

New Years Resolutions – Training/Performing

January 3rd, 2013

o other than my ordinary life resolutions which are irrelevant to the purpose of this blog here are a few of my 2013 resolutions for training and performing.

  • Finish my new Handbalance Contortion Act – Hypnotized
  • Film the above act in HD – as much for myself when i am 80 and showing the grandkids what i could do back in the days as for the fact it would be really handy for promotional purposes.
  • Get strong enough to do a perfect box splits top planche handstand that is almost at horizontal, and be completely comfortable to do that little head tilt thing Olga P does.
  • Develop a new male female duo act.
  • Get more work with Lisa with my female duo act – our duo is awesome.
  • Stretch more to get bendier
  • Create a new aerial hoop act
  • Learn Silks
  • New Website
  • New Headshot
  • Work hard in the gymnastics centre, maybe compete in the British Veterans Championships
  • Coach my little group of gymnasts to compete in a WA gymnastics competition
  • And one of my main ones is a course outside of gymnastics and circus but still within performing that i’m going to do, but it’s top secret for now 🙂

2012 over. Hello 2013.

December 30th, 2012

2012 is over and done with, and 2013 is hours away from being here.

2102 was an interesting year.  I was lucky enough to be able to perform at some really really wonderful events, travel to some amazing countries, appear exclusively on a 40 metre long billboard, appear on a primetime television programme, meet and work with more amazing performers, and pass my knowledge and skills on to some wonderful children in my teaching work, and gain my next two teaching qualifications.

I also learnt alot myself during 2012, what direction I want to head in artistically and what new pieces of work I want to create and show to the world.  I also learnt of other paths I want to begin stepping down, I have so many interests and aims and goals in life, I want to give each one the maximum chances to happen.

And so to 2013.  I am excited for it, and if it is anything like the last year has been then I know i will finish it with a big smile on my face.

Happy December !!!!

Happy December Everybody !!!!!!

A Journey

December 7th, 2012

I LOVE performing, it is in my heart, it is not an easy world, but the corporate world of performing is a world my heart loves.

One day I will tell my whole story of my journey through performing, it is quite some journey, I do believe I have had a rockier road than most have or will ever have.  I can’t tell it now because there are some things I am not able to mention without naming names, which i feel unable to do and it is not appropriate for the general internet, but if I could then you would hear in detail about a journey along a rocky slippery mountainous road where at the very beginning there were many times i stumbled and doubted myself, many times other people tried to push me down, people that did things to me that were very very wrong, and even more times where I walked along the mountain tops peaks with a view so beautiful I knew to stay strong and pick myself up every time I stumbled or was pushed about.  Today I strongly and proudly walk tall along these mountain tops smiling the whole way.  Once upon a time I dreamed of performing, I have achieved more than I thought I ever would, and I will continue to walk those mountain peaks doing handstands, teaching others, keeping happy, and amazing people with my talents along the way.

November plus A Little Video

November 23rd, 2012

I have been busy doing well quite a lot!  Gigging, training, teaching, living.

I have done some lovely gigs for some wonderful events.  I wish I had pictures or video but unfortunately although people are snapping away at me all night it is rare that I get to see any pictures.  But below is a picture I took backstage recently at a companies annual dinner dance, amazingly I attach this headdress myself and I can fully contort and one arm handstand while wearing it, I think it’s quite impressive 🙂

In other news the gymnasts I teach did really outstanding in their November competition, pins and medals galore! I am so proud of each of them.  Now we get to work for our Christmas display, so exciting!

December is about to kick off, this is traditionally my busiest month of the year, this December is looking lovely too 🙂

Just because I had some time to then here is a little training montage of myself I put together last week, enjoy and leave a comment if you like it 🙂

Harrods Home Magazine

October 6th, 2012

I have been really really lucky to be able to work with many fabulous photographers, sometimes I look at my photos and videos and I think ‘wow’.

This post is no different.  A few months ago I got to work with a fabulous photographer called Andy Bates.  It was for a shoot for Harrods Interiors Magazine.  I got to handstand on some very expensive chairs!  It was an extremely fun shoot and a pleasure to work with Lisa Bonnici and her team.

Here are the resulting pictures below the front cover, published in the October issue of Harrods Interiors Magazine (Out Now!).  I have scanned them in as I have only so far been sent a copy of the magazine, the pages are bigger than my little scanner.

Remembering my beginnings

October 4th, 2012

Something I always respect and appreciate is my beginnings, the people who helped me and believed in me when I was a little lost girl living in Leeds with no idea about my career.  The people who answered my questions, gave me my first opportunities, helped me to see that performing was a choice i could do and make a career and be successful at.After my success as a competitive gymnast, then I began at Greentop, a circus school in Sheffield.  I went to their aerial evening classes.  From that I performed in a few cabarets.  From that I performed with Urban Angels Circus.  Before moving to Bristol.  The people I met at the beginning of the journey up north, I remember them all, I don’t necessarily keep in contact, but I still remember them.  Without them I would not be where I am today.

In November I am delighted to be able to help out one of the people I remember from my Greentop days with a fashion show she is putting on at an event in Birmingham.  She is somebody who I remember as being encouraging and said nice positive things to me when I was training and performing in my early days.  She contacted me unsure of if I would say yes, but I remember my roots and beginnings and so I said yes.

One of the reasons I am writing this as a blog post is because I am increasingly frustrated with those in life who do not give back to people who have helped them along the way.  People who just take and do not give anything back.  You should never ever forget people who were once there for you, (unless of course they then do bad things to you in which case you should erase them from your life forever!).

I love this photo

September 18th, 2012

Another shot from my shoot with Simon Richardson.  I love this photo.I woke up on the day of the shoot with 1-2 hours to get ready and no idea what i was going to wear to this shoot, aside from my halloween costume I had shot in nearly every item of clothing i own and i had run out of ideas.  So i quickly packed a box with items from my sewing drawer, crafts drawer, packaging box, and jewellery draw, basically anything i saw went in.  And the below picture resulted and i LOVE   sally155.jpg

Not as flexible as i can go but aesthetically/photographically was superior to all the images of the same pose where my leg was pulled way over my head is this image.

Halloween Handbalance – Arachnid

September 14th, 2012

I have a special Halloween Handbalance Act.  Photo’s below by the amazing Simon Richardson.Inspired recently by the ghastly 8 legged nasty spider that entered my bedroom and ran across the bed towards me causing a mini heart attack and a big Eeeekk scream from me, then I decided that it was a bit like me, big long legs and the ability to squeeze into a small space (didn’t get rid of it for an hour!).  So I made an act to fit and good for Halloween.I guess I could also be a witch or a dracula… I forgot to photograph my amazing black and red long cape with the costume!

But anyway, I can do ambient sets or a choreographed act which is 5 1/2 minutes long and culminates with me squeezing into my box.

If you do read my blog then I would love it if you could leave a comment now and again 🙂  It keeps me happy and encourages me to post more often!!!  🙂

Shambala Festival

September 14th, 2012

This was one of the most awesome festivals I have been to.  I am not usually a festival person, I dislike camping and using portaloos.  I agreed to perform at Shambala with a little bit of fear that I didn’t own a tent, wellies, anything festival like, and a car to get me there and back.  Luckily friends helped me out with the accessories and Shambala was a wonderful place where everything was wonderful, and a stunning location.

I performed my Hanky Panky act once a day in the Kamikaze tent.  It was a fabulous cabaret with some incredibly talented acts.

Here are a few photos, the ones of me actually performing were taken by the incredible Spencer Dixey.

And me with my big rucksack bag like a proper little festival goer who travelled by train and bus, and it was ok!!!!

And to Autumn/Winter

September 11th, 2012

Wow London you have been AWESOME this summer !!!! Queens Jubilee, Olympics, Paralympics.  I feel so lucky to be living in London and being able to witness all of this as it has truly been a very special summer.I have been busy performing at some amazing events – some connected to the Olympics/Paralympics and some not.  I’d name some of my favourite events I have performed at over the summer but every event is special to me as it is a different audience each time, and it is a pleasure to be able to show and perform my talents and acts to every appreciative person whoever they are and wherever they come from.   Over the summer I have performed in posh hotels, fields and festivals, restaurants with the best views over London, spectacular halls, and on the television 🙂

And now to Autumn/Winter.  Below is a sneek peak at an image by Nick Delaney of me in my Snow Princess costume.  It already has a few hundred sparkly rhinestones on it that really sparkle in the light, I also plan to have a few hundred more rhinestones added to it!  Images of Christmas Elfs, and Halloween Witches to come!!!
